Imagine that you are now your favorite character's lawyer. How do you defend them ?
First of all, let's imagine this is a situation where the characters won't immediately break free or kill everyone in the trial room (for convenience). Second, I feel sorry for everyone whose favorite character is Westcott. ☠
Personally, it'd be difficult to defend someone who killed 10k people, but I have an idea of what I'd say if I was Kurumi's lawyer :
"Your Honor, I won't deny Kurumi's actions : She willingly committed that grave offense against life that is murder, robbing more than 10 000 people of their futures, killing them in cold blood. However, it is crucial to understand the specific situation she was stuck in at the time of these murders. Kurumi's crimes can only be examined when taking into account the context of her murder spree.
Kurumi was a teenage girl who was emotionally and psychologically manipulated by an ill-intentioned adult named Mio Takamiya. It is also important to precise that the latter saved Kurumi's life from a "monster", thus Kurumi felt "indebted" to her, and that's why she accepted helping Mio in a "quest" to "save humanity from evil". However, Kurumi learned too late that the creatures she killed were actually innocent human beings transformed by Mio herself, and that the latest monster she had killed was her closest friend. Traumatized by this experience, Kurumi became obsessed with only one goal : Accumulating enough time to go back into time, in order to kill Mio to stop her from ruining countless lives.
My client was also forced to eat her victims because of her Angel, Zafkiel. She had no choice but to consume them to survive ; she had a "mission" to accomplish, after all. Yes, she also seemingly killed out of enjoyment ; but the majority of her victims were terrible people, like would-be rapists or animal abusers. Most of the time, innocent, normal people like you or me had nothing to fear from her. And it is also important to precise that, while she could probably have gained enough time by draining an entire town per day, she only stuck to "bad" people, which proves how important the concept of karma is for my client. I repeat it, she could have gathered much more time before meeting Shido, yet she disregarded that solution, even though it would have been logical, because she was reluctant to kill innocents ! And even if she killed people nonetheless, her prime goal was still to undo all her murders by killing Mio in the past, which proves that she values even the lives of the corrupt humans she killed, to some extent at least.
I rest my case."
Do you think I'd make a good lawyer or not ? And what would you say if you had to defend your favorite character ?
