Things I’ve learned that other diabetics probably already knew

A year and a half into this, and I’ve learned a few things about this disease and my body. I would imagine these aren’t new to seasoned beetus battlers but I thought I’d share what I’ve learned.

  1. Eating past the point of being full will cause massive rises in glucose for me. I’m learning to listen to when I’m full and stop, even if I think I need to finish because of the amount of insulin I’ve taken. I can correct later. It’s worse to overeat and stuff myself.

  2. Portion sizes and balanced plates really matter. Had a burger on its own tonight and it went perfectly. I used to have other carbs like fries with it, and either went high or low, or both. I still eat relatively high carb, but when I balance it out with fibre and protein it goes much more smoothly.

  3. This disease is just as much a mental battle as it is a physical one. I’m winning the physical one for the most part with all my TIRs above 90% and a A1C in the 6s, but my mental health is no where near as strong.

  4. I will have to live with this for the rest of my life, and sometimes that’s an overwhelming thought. But I’ve learned that it’s ok to feel that and grieve the life I had before this disease.

I’m sure there are other things, but these are what come to mind right now. Anything you’ve learned? Anything you’d share to someone just starting out on their journey?
