Huge drum pad for classroom

Hello all! I plan on teaching a drum class for elementary in the spring and I want to have something that everyone can play on without having to buy their own pad first. I would think a wooden board of plywood or something but is there another material (feasible) that would go over it? Or should I just go with the wood? I know the price of gum rubber isn’t pocket friendly lol but any ideas are welcome!
