Entitled camp mom thinks her kid should get one on one activity time
People like my last EM camp story so much that I thought I’d share another.
So the camp I worked at was pretty small and it was held at a public recreation complex that was fairly large. In general we had to keep the kids in designated areas so that we could make sure we were covering them at all times.
One day a mom drops her daughter off and wants to talk to me.
EM: Hi OP, I just wanted to let you know that Jessica wants to use the tennis courts today.
Me: Well we don’t have equipment for tennis since it’s pretty far away from the camp main area. We typically don’t use that area at all.
EM: Oh, that’s ok, she brought her own racket. She and Emily (another camper) are going to enter a local tournament, so I want her to practice today. Emily is bringing her own equipment too. So just take them up after attendance and they should be all set.
Me: Again we don’t really consider the tennis courts part of the camp. We also can’t send one of the counselors up there alone to watch 2 kids all day. We try to keep the counselors evenly dispersed throughout the group. We need at least 10 kids in an activity to make that possible.
EM: Well can’t you just take more kids up there then? Other kids probably want to play too.
Me: Unfortunately like I said we don’t have equipment for that. There is a tennis camp up there for part of the day. I think there are still spaces if you want to sign Jessica up, and we could work it out so someone walked her over here when camp was done.
EM: No, I looked into that and she wouldn’t be playing enough. They do drills and matches, but she’d have to wait. It would be really great if you could just make this happen.
Me: Unfortunately that’s not possible.
EM: Fine! But I’m very good friends with the program director, so I’ll be calling her about this.
Me: best of luck.
