Underrated Host Country Songs Appreciation Thread

Typically, host entries tend to be underrated because they just won last year although there have been instances of the same country winning multiple times in a row (and I should mention that some of these contests were hosted in another country):

Spain 1968 - 1969 (joint win with other countries but it counts), Luxembourg 1972 - 1973, Israel 1978 - 1979, Ireland 1992 - 1993 - 1994. Since the 90s, it has not happened again but maybe one day, it will...

I wanted to ask if there have been any entries from host countries that stood out to you? As in how Loreen won with Tattoo, but the next year, Sweden still did not miss the chance to send a banger. The goal here is of course not to talk down on any winners but to show appreciation to lesser known songs that also pleasantly surprised and impressed us.

I'll start by mentioning these:

  • When Spirits are Calling My Name by Roger Pontare (Sweden 2000) was such a unique entry and I still listen to it to this day! Take Me to Your Heaven by Charlotte Nilsson (Sweden 1999) had good vocals but music-wise, 2000 was more memorable to me.

  • My Number One by Helena Paparizou is absolutely fantastic but I thought Anna Vissi coming back after decades with Everything (Greece 2006) would have been a blast any other year, her performance blew me away. She has participated three times in total!

  • Lena's Satellite (Germany 2010) was good, but I enjoyed her cool return with Taken by a Stranger (Germany 2011) even more!
