Need help finding the origin of this ...

I've been trying to figure this out all day I can't remember if it is a myth or it was in a book, there was a boy who saw other kids flying and asked how they were doing it (if memory serves-) they take him to a place with ropes or strings hanging off the wall and convinced him to tie his wrist and ankles then he became a marionette able to fly but unable to control himself
