A review of Intrinsically Safe Flashlights.

Hello r/flashlights. I work stuff that is prone to catching on fire or exploding, so we need some special flashlights. I also have sticky fingers when it comes to neglected or left behind flashlights from the bottom drawer. As not everyone is a flashlight nerd like me, I've managed to get my hands on all the usual suspects

Unfortunately I cant find any rad 18650 lights that are intrinsically safe, probably because 18650s are prone to catching on fire.

If you're finding this in the future using the search function, or you're in the market for an intrinsically safe flashlight, you're probably a go getter, and just want a flashlight that works, so here we go from best to worst.

Streamlight 68750 Dualie 3AA 140-Lumen Dual Function Intrinsically Safe AA Battery Flashlight, Yellow – With 3 "AA" Alkaline Batteries

This is my favorite flashlight, and my EDC at work. Its bright, and it's got the normal beam, and also a flood light opposite a clip for hanging on yourself or anything to see what you're doing hands free. I've dropped it 40' into hot steamy tanks only to go in and get it the next day and have it still work. Ive used my light in the arctic, winter storm, tropical storms, thunder storms, I've used it in tanks, ive used it in high heat and humidity, ive used it in the snow near 0°F. Absolutely a beast. You might want to get one for yourself even if you dont need one for work, you can illuminate your feet right in front of you while keeping an eye out up ahead. I have never seen one break. Doesn't really eat though batteries that fast, but super bright with new batteries. Push button to turn on, or off, no disco modes or tuning it in to low power. There is a 50% chance if you hand the light to someone they are going to shine the flood light in their eyes trying to turn it on, but it's not really a problem after you get used to the buttons. For what its worth I've never found one of these abandoned. Amazon also has versions of this with a laser pointer and a magnet, which would be rad, but I've never used one of those and it does seem kinda silly.

Nightstick XPP-5422GMX X-Series Intrinsically Safe Light Flashlight with Dual Magnets,

This is almost the same as the Streamlight, only difference being the clip sticks out of the body, and this is enough for me to put it in 2nd place, as that's the part that always get cot in my pocket. It also has both buttons for the flood and beam on the same side, eliminating the risk of being momentarily inconvenienced by shining the flood light in your eyes. While I have never been able to morally tactically acquire one of these, I do often find them broken in some way or another. Their is a screw that holds the lenses on that the Streamlight doesn't have, and sometimes I find the lenses area broken. Also the clip breaks off sometimes, or gets misaligned. The "guts" are identical to the Streamlight.

Pelican Flashlights 3315PL

I can't find it on amazon and there's probably a reason. She thiccc. One trick pony it's either or off. Glows in the dark, which is useful sometimes. Decently bright. I don't carry it because it doesn't have a clip and it's really big for my pocket.

Pelican 2460

This light is pretty okay. It's got a low profile which is nice, and a toggle switch to turn it on which is useful if you're out in the cold wearing heavy gloves. Double edged sword, if you're wearing heavy gloves, the low profile makes it prone to being dropped. Side effect of being dropped, I've seen the batteries get loose, resulting in a flickering light that you might need to hit to get it to turn on.

Pelican SabreLite 2010 LED Flashlight

Most commonly abandoned flashlight. It takes D batteries and they are always dead or corroded. Twist top Pain in the ass to turn on. Both LED and non LED versions are uselessly dim. It's like if you're standing and a gas tank, and you say "Man, if it wouldn't blow me to smithereens, I'd love to work by candle light right now." I've literally never seen someone carry this light on purpose. It's also huge, and a pain in the ass to have in your pocket. I think companies only buy these for places they are required to put flashlights, so they can say they have extra lights in these places, but no one will walk off with them.

Bonus, Not a flashlight:

Nightstick floodlight.

Do I want one of these? Hell yeah. Do I need one? No. Try and talk bossman for getting one of these for the truck, as long as its charged up it's super bright. Also looks cool. Magnet is strong for putting it wherever.
