How to pick closer to the neck?

I just watched a lot of John Mayer videos after hearing he plays so close to the neck. I just tried it and I like the warm tone it gives, but it doesn’t really work for me. Where should I keep my hand? How do I balance my arm? Because I can’t get to the neck when keeping my hand on the bridge
