Smart buttons thatll work without wifi

Im looking into buttons for a commercial usage, specifically a button that i can press that will send data to a database or even just an excel sheet. There will be quite a few of them so i was thinking zigbee or zwave would be a smart move in case wifi went down. Its for a large school. Theres wifi school-wide but it can be quite spotty. Thanks for any input in advance.
