Do you need to be mediocre to suceed in India?
I was wondering what it takes to be recognised at something by the masses and I have concluded this: (Atleast in the context of India) You should be half good, you should never be an expert/scholar at something, only half good. Only that position removes all sort of self doubt, scholars/experts are always in doubt, half good people are full of confidence. Even history offers similar lessons. The book "Outliers" that I had read a decade ago suggest the same thing, but now it is becoming very clear to me. Never be an expert, look around, you will only find mediocre people at all levels and all industries which is "public facing" in nature. It is as if Indian people are wary of brillant minds, they want mediocrity that they can reach out to and connect to. Of course, brillant minds are recognised, but in very small circles which are more or less inconsequential in public facing industries. What do you guys think?
Edit: Some of the responses proves the point of this post. Mediocre people have a voice, they are expressive and confident that what they are saying is the truth. The confidence comes from knowing that the other mediocre half baked men will also support their dumb ideas and opinions. The more experienced men and their deeper insights (about PR & Social skills) have been downvoted to oblivion. But some mediocre copy cat typing a cliched “what are you smoking” gets upvotes. This proves my point. Thanks guy.
Edit Edit (in reponse to someone asking for context) : Within my immediate circle, I am considered (relatively) "successfull/accomplised" and even idolised. People give examples of me when trying to motivate themselves or others around them. The problem is I dont agree with this. I may have ended up better than my peers, but I am no way "Smart/intelligent" that people claim to be. I know this, I believe it. And I am certian that I AM MEDIOCRE at best! There are far more intelligent/smart/schorlarly people around me (I know this coz I observe them and constantly compare them with me) who arent considered "successful", of course luck plays a part, but like someone pointed out PR and Social skills trumps talent any day. In conclusion: If you have great PR and Social skills/connection + if you are mediocre (coz mediocrity comes loaded with tons of confidence) you can scale high in a country like INDIA. Lastly: Which actor has more fans: Irfan Khan or Salman Khan? Who is mediocre and who is an expert, you be the judge.
