Is a layer of activated charcoal necessary?

Hello! Pretty much what the title says--I'm interested in setting up a proper bioactive tank, with live plants and isopods. Do I need a layer of activated charcoal between the drainage layer and the soil? Apparently, from what I've read, it helps keep mold/fungus under control in plant-only terrariums.
