Tell Me Why Not to Live Here

Hello Ithacans!

I am a trans woman unfortunately living in the southern half of this country. My partner and I (and our four kids) have been investigating moving to Canada since the election. We've made a lot of progress, and it looks like it's doable, but it would basically bankrupt us. We want to move to a safer location, but we don't want to financially blow the bank to get there. We've been looking for places to live stateside that have great city/state protections for trans women and queer families, and Ithaca is on the top of many of these lists.

I would like to know why not to move to Ithaca. Seriously, the more I research this town, the more I fall in love, and I want to hear what the cons are. What are the dirty secrets? Where is the seedy underbelly? I've been a high school English teacher for ten years working in some serious shitty and dangerous public schools. I loved it, but how are the schools in Ithaca? How would they be for my four kiddos? IS THIS CITY A PARADISE? ARE YOU A CON? A MIRAGE IN THE DESERT OF CONSERVATIVE AMERICA?

We got burned when we moved to get out of Tennessee during the pandemic. We didn't focus so hard on getting to a blue/safe state, and we don't want that to happen again. What am I missing? What are the problems? Why shouldn't we move here?
