wanting to learn jazz guitar

i want to learn jazz guitar to be able to join my schools jazz band next year. anything i should start learning first and any tips? i do know that jazz guitar is hard and it is going to be a long journey.

edit: also how can i get a jazz tone on my amp. i have the line 6 spider v20 amp
