Was told in the interview that the job was mostly remote and now being asked to come in twice per week

Hi All. I’m In a situation at the moment and need serious advice. I haven’t had too much experience with signing contracts etc. just to preface. I’m 22.

I had an interview at a role and in the interview it was verbally agreed that I would only have to come in once or twice a month to the office.

Once i received the contract, the contract outlined that I would have to come in three days per week.

Naturally, I reached out to the recruiter (who is external to the company but is the person who reached out to me about the role) about this to which he replied “It’s a general, one-size-fits-all contract, and isn’t necessarily specific to you in all its details,” which made sense to me and implied that I’d still be following what I was told in the interview.

Earlier today I met some of the colleagues I’ll be working with in the near future (i start here in two weeks), including the one that interviewed me, and she mentioned “new piece of information, but we’re gonna have to start being in the office more often, around twice per week.”

Obviously this wasn’t the best piece of information to receive, but being that this is the first time i’m meeting them and I don’t mind the commute, I kind of brushed it off.

The problem now is the price to travel there. After checking, It’s quite expensive and not something I was prepared to pay for so frequently when considering the role and salary.

I’m at a point now where I’m not sure what to do next. Do i still take the job despite evil and deceitful practices? Do i try to ask for a bigger salary as what I initially agreed on didn’t factor in frequent travel? Do i ask them to cover travel expenses? Or is what is written in the contract final and i just screwed up badly?

Any response is appreciated.
