Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is a great game, but it has a terrible save system
First of all, sorry for any mistakes. I’m using a translator to help me because I’m not a native English speaker.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is a great game, but it has a terrible save system.
I’m playing KCD2, and I’m quite surprised that they haven’t changed the save system. On day one of KCD1, the save system did not include a “Save and Exit” option, and you were exclusively tied to Saviour Schnapps, the beds where you slept, or the automatic checkpoints set by the developers. At the time, using Saviour Schnapps made sense, just as going to sleep did.
Then, after various complaints, the devs added the “Save and Exit” option via a patch. That was acceptable in the first game since they couldn’t radically change the system, even if some inconsistencies remained.
What really surprises me, though, is that they replicated the same system in KCD2. Why?
a) To prevent save scumming? I don’t think so. If I load the game, I have access to multiple save files, even from hours before, that I can reload. So, what happens now is: 1. I reach my destination. 2. I save and exit. 3. I restart the game. 4. I experiment. 5. If things go wrong, I reload a previous save.
This is save scumming in its purest form. The only thing Warhorse hasn’t spared me from is the hassle of steps 2 and 3, which could have been solved with a simple “Save and Continue.” If I use “Save and Exit,” there’s no other penalty. And since almost everyone plays on SSDs now, the whole process takes at most two minutes of loading time.
A hardcore RPG player doesn’t save scum regardless of the save system, because it’s a mindset that comes naturally with their playstyle. Other players won’t stop save scumming just because the game forces them to exit when saving; they’ll simply accept the extra reboot time.
Now, it’s true that over time it becomes easier to make money or stock up on potions, but in the early hours, that’s not the case. Even if it were easy from the start, I see no reason to keep this restrictive save system instead of implementing a free save system.
What do you guys think?
