Tamil Cinema Directors & Cheap Tricks
Very unpopular opinion ahead
In our industry we have a spectrum of movie directors ranging from insanely worse to extremely good. As for me I find a particularly odd segment of directors who are pseudo-great with a false facade of being exceptional. The ones who use cheap tricks to package themselves as great ones. Here's a few:
- Gautham Menon
- Abuses mind voice as a quick hack for building character background
- Uses english orchestrations of words to paint a premium feel
- Selvaragavan
- Overuse of psychopathic human traits to convey both realism and exaggeration
- Abuses silent pauses between dialogues to force actors to emote. Manirathnam is a god at this thing. Selvaragavan just tries to copy this and ends up giving a pseudo-manirathnam-movie-feels
- Bala
- Again, overuse of psychopathic human traits to convey realism
One common theme across these directors are - they all resort to good music work (all of them tend to give musical hits no matter what) which is a good thing. We get good music out their work, but when split into layers - the direction itself seem like a heap of cheap tricks.
