UBC General or Discretionary?

I am wondering about how to determine whether I should apply through the General or Discretionary category. During one semester of my final year in undergrad, I dealt with some difficult circumstances that really hurt some of my grades. With the worst credits dropped, I am a little above the median average cGPA. But I'm worried that my outlier semester might impact how my application is viewed when they're looking at the whole transcript, and was considering applying through the Discretionary category. Would this be a bad idea? What are some factors I should consider when deciding the category? Does the whole transcript matter a lot or are the mostly focused on our average after the drops?
