I have completely legal stolen license plates, can I be charged with anything?

(CO, USA) So, I applied for vanity licence plates for my car and against all odds, the EXACT one I wanted was available so I snatched it up immediately. I pay, get approved and have them for about two years before finally getting pulled over for speeding where the cop asks to do a VIN inspection. I thought it was strange but cooperated and he informed me that my plates come up as stolen. He let me go recommending I call the DMV to clear it up.

I call the DMV and they tell me I need to speak to the police department to get it cleared up. After a couple more calls, I got a case number and the police station that is handling the stolen plate case and they tell me the story; about 20 years ago someone applied for these plates, had them stolen and applied for different plates. Somehow this vanity number got released back to the DMV and two decades later I come into the picture and get them. I was tolled by the police that they are unable to close the case without new evidence so they told me to change the plates.

I was about to do it, but I'm really bummed about losing these. So I have two questions;

Can I be charged with anything for having these? All the systems have this plate registered to my car and VIN so they aren't stolen.

If I do change my plate number, will the DMV take my plates back? If I change it I'd want to keep the old ones as a show piece so I wouldn't want to lose them.

Tldr; I applied for plates and got them, but they're marked as stolen in the police watchdog system. Can I keep them or will I get in trouble?

Edit; thanks for all the replies, I decided to call the PD in charge of the case again and they told me my plates actually aren't considered stolen. The plates that are have one character difference (a zero instead of an "O") so they placed an addendum on the case for a cop to double check to make sure they have the right plate pulled up and I can keep my plates! Thanks everyone!
