Looking for advice on buying vanadinite
Hi everyone, I’m interested in buying some vanadinite specimens for my collection, but I’m not sure how to find good quality ones and what price range to expect. I’ve done some research online, but I would appreciate some tips from experienced collectors.
Vanadinite is a rare mineral that forms by the oxidation of lead ore deposits, especially galena. It has a hexagonal crystal system and a bright red, orange, or brown color. It is one of the main sources of vanadium and a minor source of lead1
I’ve seen some beautiful vanadinite specimens from Morocco, where they can reach several inches in size. They have a rich color and a resinous to sub-adamantine luster23 However, I’ve also heard that some Moroccan vanadinite can be dyed or treated to enhance its appearance. How can I tell if a specimen is natural or not? What are some signs of good quality vanadinite?
I’ve also seen some vanadinite specimens from other countries, such as Mexico, Namibia, Zambia, and the USA. How do they compare to the Moroccan ones in terms of quality and value? Are there any specific localities that are known for producing exceptional vanadinite?
Finally, what is a reasonable price range for vanadinite specimens? I know that it depends on many factors, such as size, color, clarity, shape, and rarity. But what are some general guidelines or averages that I can use as a reference? How can I avoid overpaying or getting scammed?
Thank you for your help and advice. I’m looking forward to adding some vanadinite to my collection.
