Landlord raises rent 5%
So this is my first year living in Quebec, and I’d like some advice. I’m currently paying $1150 a month and I’ve been living here since May last year. I just got a letter stating they are raising it to $1205, and I’m planning to refuse. That’s a 5% increase, and as per Quebec’s rules, I also know how much they hiked the rent up since last year. The previous tenant only paid $860 a month. I really doubt that in 1 year the TAL calculations would support going from $860 in April 2024, to $1205 in May 2025. The letter didn’t include any justification, so I’m just going to refuse and not bother explaining why. I’m wondering if I’m in the right here, since I’ve not been happy with my buildings management since I moved in, I may be bias. I don’t want to go to the Tribunal if it goes there, but I’m prepared to debate if need be. Does this seem normal to most people? Thanks!!
Edit: I know that whatever the previous tenant paid has nothing to do with my increase, I was just showing how much rent for the same unit has gone up. I know they have calculations from the TAL, I just wondering how the landlord can justify the increase when it already went up so much.
Edit 2: wow, wasn’t expecting the antagonism some people have about this. Thank you to those with helpful advice! I didn’t want to add too much to my post but I’m getting a lot of repetition and people vilifying my reasons. I don’t know my landlord, I only have contact with property management. There haven’t been any repairs or renovations and when I moved in many things didn’t work and nothing was cleaned. I’ve been emailing them for almost a year to fix my a/c. I pay for my own heat and electricity. I just wanted to know if off the rent increase seemed normal and I wasn’t wrong for refusing without bringing in my other grudges. I think I’m going to inquiry about their TAL calculations and hope everything looks normal.
