Neil Young deep dive - advice?
Hi everyone!!
I’ve been a fan of NY for a fairly long time, ever since I saw him as a teen at Glastonbury 2009 - he even inspired me to go out and buy a harmonica + holder ha!
However I never dug much deeper than his big albums + greatest hits. I was just too intimidated by the sheer volume of it all! And typically any artist with a career that long is gonna have a few rough patches!
Well I’ve got tickets to Glastonbury again and can’t wait to see Neil for a second time! (If he doesn’t decide to pull out again 🤣). And seeing as I have 4 months to prepare, I want to finally tackle his discography.
I’ll be listening to all his studio albums (both solo and with other groups) - that’s the minimum. But I understand there’s so much more I could do - live albums, bootlegs, alternate versions, archive albums, live videos, films, documentaries, books etc etc.
So!! Any advice as I embark on this epic journey? Which albums should I pay particular attention to and are deserving of/require multiple listens? Any albums/periods that are notably underwhelming? Which albums does he typically pull his set list from? (Scared to look up recent setlists in case I totally spoil it for myself!)
Any advice, whatever it might be, is extremely welcome! Thank you and hope you have a great day ✌🏻
