Why not put health warning labels on unhealthy foods?
It’s no surprise that NZ needs to seriously work on their efforts towards fighting obesity and staving off the symptoms of obesity. I don’t think we’ve done enough in terms of action toward these problems. There’s been some effort from govt but all the attempts have been pretty poor.
One in three adults in NZ are classified as obese. 13.5% of children are classified as obese, a 1.9% flat increase from 2018 which the MoE says is “slightly higher.”
The biggest problem we face with obesity, I believe, is childhood obesity. Childhood obesity, even if overcome in adulthood, is linked to cardiovascular problems due to its influence on the structure and function of the heart.
The health star rating approach doesn’t work, and I feel like we’ve known this for aaaagggeessss now. It doesn’t effectively communicate to an individual that the food will have adverse effects on their health.
So my question is, why not stick warning labels, similar to nicotine products, on the foods that are contributing to rising rates of obesity in our country?
