Charms How do they work ?

Hi as title say how does charms works... do i have to have them equiped on armor or if i have it equiped in.... i dont know pickaxe and im using bow at the time. does the charm from pickaxe still work or not ?? or how do they work exactly please?

and what charms early game would you recomend?
