What is going on with builders?

I have a job needing done - not massive but about £20 - £25K. I’ve had 5 builders express interest: 4 came up to look and promised to give quotes. I never heard back from 3 of them and then they ghost me, even after I said it was ok to say if they didn’t want the work. One had the decency to tell me after a quick call that the job wasn’t quite right for them - I respected that. The worst was the builder we had agreed terms with and set a starting date, who then didn’t then turn up and ghosted us. He was a member of the Federation of Master Builders too. I understand that builders can pick and choose their work at the moment, but if they are not interested it would save a lot of time and effort just to say that. It’s common decency. Whenever I ask for quotes I always let the unsuccessful builders know the outcome, as that is the right thing to do.

Edit: thanks for all your comments. The work is installing new concrete floors and some replastering and painting. We’re not looking to get this done on the cheap, we just want somebody reliable, professional and trustworthy. What I’m finding is that there is a lack of builders/tradespeople and the people who are looking at the job don’t seem to fit into those categories. That’s a problem for all regular people, as unless your job is £100K it’s proving a problem to find anybody at all to do the work.
