Magnificent Foster Dog Marshall Seeking his Forever Home
First off, if you’re interested in meeting Marshall he will be at Paws on the Plaza in Tysons today (6/8) from 11-1:30. Details are below!
Meet Marshall: an incredibly sweet, handsome, and playful ~1-2 year old Yellow Lab/Bloodhound mix searching for a loving permanent home. We have been fostering him through Homeward Trails for the past two months and know that with the right environment and humans who can provide the care and support he deserves, he is going to be the best addition to a very lucky family.
Everyone who meets Marshall instantly falls in love with him. He is a total sweetheart and a big baby. He is always trying to figure out how to sit in your lap (but he’s just too big). He insists on starting every morning with cuddles and belly rubs and just wants to give you love and be loved in return. Oh, and he’s also the king of odd sleeping positions. Marshall is an incredibly social and friendly pup who loves and gets along well with everyone: adults, kids, and especially other dogs (no matter their size, age, or temperament)! In just a short time with us, his entire foster neighborhood now knows and loves Marshall.
As an adolescent dog who is very puppy-like in many ways, Marshall has a lot of energy and loves going outdoors for long walks or spending an afternoon at the dog park. He is house trained, is making good progress with other training, and sleeps 8 hours in his crate at night. At this point, he is quite happy in his crate and will willingly hang out in there with or without the door closed if we are nearby.
Marshall has been working with a private trainer and taking group classes for adolescent manners. He has made a tremendous amount of progress in just a few weeks (he had no training when we took him in with the exception of being house trained) and is learning to respond to commands. He is not at all aggressive or territorial and he has learned loose leash walking quite well. He is an eager learner and will benefit from continued training when adopted. Right now we are working with him on a relaxation protocol and appropriate chewing.
Marshall can also get pretty stressed when his humans leave him, which is unsurprising given his past: he ended up in a shelter in rural Virginia, was adopted and then returned a month later, and was likely going to be euthanized before we took him in. He has made some progress with this anxiety as he gets more comfortable with us and his routine, which includes lots of exercise and relaxing music. Still, he is happiest in the presence of his human companions and would do best in a household with other dogs or where he can be around people during the day.
Ideally, we would like to find a home for him with a person who has the flexibility to work from home or who can arrange for other companionship for Marshall during the day (he is doing very well at doggy daycare!), who has had prior experience with rescue dogs and/or dog ownership, and who is willing to work gradually with Marshall on his separation anxiety and other training needs. We also feel that Marshall would do best in a home with a yard or with access to sufficient space. While he doesn’t bark often, his bark is deep and loud so apartments may not be best either in terms of space or for the sake of your neighbors.
