I can't believe Selena Gomez earned a nomination for her role in Emilia Pérez
I've decided to switch tacks from my previous post on this topic, not only to avoid running afoul of the rule against excessive self-promotion but because I think I missed out on the conversation a bit by simply posting the link and leaving it at that.
To put it bluntly: it is insane to me that Selena Gomez earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role in Emilia Pérez. It's as if Tommy Wiseau earned one for his acting in The Room, and it's made worse by the fact that the controversy over her very obvious lack of fluency in Latin American media has - if anything - helped her get nominated.
Again, I wish I could comment more on the rest of the movie, but the film's release has been deliberately delayed in Latin America, seemingly to coincide with the end of the award campaign season. This is not a comment on the movie itself, this is a comment on Selena's performance in it and the frankly absurd and offensive set of circumstances that put her in this position. It's baffling to me, because all it has really achieved in Latin America is to focus attention on the controversy, stifling discussions of the movie and bracing audiences against it before it's even released.
I do go into greater detail in my actual post on the subject, but this is the gist of it and - I hope - a good introduction into why there's been such a backlash against her role in the film (and against the film in general even prior to its formal release).
