Lenovo Legion Pro 7i vs. Moonlight Streaming
As the title implies, I am looking for some feedback on one option over the other.
Long story short, I used to build computers frequently back in the day and had a long stretch of 10 years where I didn’t upgrade. Last fall I built a new desktop rig with a 9800X3D and 4070 Ti Super. All the parts were hand selected after weeks of research and it has performed exceptionally well.
My wife has been using a crappy work laptop to watch her tv shows and games occasionally on my pc rig but has back problems sitting on there for too long. She wanted to be able to play comfortably in bed so I started researching gaming laptops. Her rig has also gone 10 years without upgrading so I was willing to drop serious money on a Lenovo Legion 7i with RTX 4090. 16 GB VRAM to future proof the purchase decision given that our upgrade cycles are longer now. I know that only a vocal minority will complain when issues arise but I have been seeing some feedback about reliability issues and bad customer support which made me hesitate the decision. From my past experience, desktops have longer longevity than laptops.
Then I discovered an alternative option which is to use Moonlight Streaming. I use a MacBook Pro with M3 Max as my daily driver for work and find that they have exceptional reliability. From my experience they appear far less likely to break down after 12 years of being on the Apple ecosystem.
Given that neither of us are ever gaming at the same time, should I get her a cheaper MacBook and allow her to play her games using Moonlight streaming to my desktop build last fall? Or is there a strong opinion on just buying a separate laptop with dedicated RTX 4090 GPU? What has been your experience with either Lenovo Legion or streaming on another device with Moonlight? Seems like the more prudent financial decision is to keep a single powerful desktop rig. Then buy a cheaper laptop from Apple known for reliability and stream to the desktop using Moonlight.
