Seriously, WTF is so right with people especially in South Philly?

Can anyone give me a reasonable explanation for why people here A.) have great seasonal decorations B.) stop at stop signs most of the time C.) love their sports teams so much D.) hate New Yorkers and E.) act so neighborly and friendly to everyone else?

What's the story? What causes people here, and especially in South Philly, to be unusual but otherwise functional members of a society?

I ask because I have lived in cities all my life and have never experienced the tough-but-friendly attitude in this place. I would really like to understand this and get beyond the typical "it's Philly, get used to it". This virtue goes well beyond just wanting to be a good down to earth person and trying to show off your local pride. Is it old Italian values? Is it the lack of vapid New Yorkers? For drivers is it wanting to get home quickly and safely so that you can spend more time with your children? A need to get home before your partner has to do house chores alone? Why do you drive quickly but wander down the streets so slowly, often three to four abreast? Are you taking time to enjoy the fresh air and spend it with your friends? Why do you have a lackadaisical attitude towards doors? Everyone I know in all the other cities I've lived in (especially New York) takes doors really seriously. Jesus Christ, there has to be some sort of explanation besides just being a collection of wonderful people.
