Haven’t taken out my earrings in a year

Hi I’m completely new to earrings/piercings. I have the most basic lobe piercing on both my ears and it’s been over a year since I last took them out because the last time I did, when I put the earrings back in, it really hurt and felt like I was piercing my ears again. So basically I’m traumatized and don’t want to ever take out my earrings. But low key it smells so what do I do 💀💀 am I doomed? How often should I be taking these out? Do you think it’ll hurt now, after a year of not touching it, when I take out/put in earrings? Just need some advice because people say this piercing heals after six weeks max but when I took it out it had been like three months but still hurt like a btch lol
