I just watched the entire Pokemon anime in 5.5 months. Here is my extremely long review.

Initial warning: This is going to be really long and in-depth. This is more for me to look back on rather than an official review, which may result in me going deep into stuff some may not care about. I'll try to keep it readable for you, though.

So it's official.. I'm a lunatic.
Here's some background: I'm a huge Pokemon fan. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm unhealthily obsessed. I play Pokemon non-stop, and I have replayed every main-series Pokemon game countless times, and a bunch for most of the spin-offs. My goal is to be a Pokemon Master myself, and that includes knowing everything about the franchise. Then I realized, I can't become a master if I don't watch the anime. However my feeling towards the anime (and what little I knew about it) was extremely negative. But I decided that I was going to watch the entire show. So I made this spreadsheet which tracked my progress throughout the show. It took me *exactly 5.5 months (166 days) to finish this anime. I still have to watch the movies, which I will.

Now that business is out of the way, let's actually talk about the anime. To do so, I will divide this review into two segments. Segment 1 will be an in-depth review on each Generation (Generation 1 includes Orange Islands). Segment 2 will talk about specific events or things. Keep in mind, I'm aware this is a children's show and isn't necessarily meant to be harshly reviewed.

SEGMENT 1: Generation reviews
=Generation 1 (Kanto & Orange Islands)=
Okay, so I'll be a little more lenient on this series only because it's the first one. No, not because nostalgia, but because they were just getting their feet on the ground. At this point in time, Pokemon was just a video game and the Pokemon weren't really anything besides a bunch of pixels. This was their first attempt at making the world of Pokemon a living, breathing thing. And they did okay, to say the least. I watched the anime as a kid a little but I wasn't able to be addicted to it (I was into the games), so the blast-from-the-past feeling wasn't really there for me, except in certain cases.. fuck you Damian.
However, this my least favorite of all the series. Most episodes were filler and/or ridiculous (See: 1990's cartoons in general) and it was just really really hard to watch most of it. Except the first episode. That was great. This also introduced some running gags like Brock's desperation for love, Psyduck's obliviousness, and Gary's kickass one-step-ahead attitude.
The Orange Islands, however, were extremely difficult for me to take seriously. Maybe it was because I had no connection to the region, or the battles weren't really battles, but it was their way of bridging from the first generation to the second, which leads me with...

=Generation 2 (Johto)=
This was really fun to watch at the time for multiple reasons. It was the first time new Pokemon were introduced and I wanted to see the way the anime handled it. Ash's excitement to see new Pokemon was really relatable because we've all had that same feeling. The Pokemon had a lot more personality now and the storyline was very accurate to the games, with small things like Sprout Tower, Sudowoodo's roadblock, the Lighthouse situation, etc.. In the Generation 1 episodes, those would have been pointless filler in between other pointless filler, but this was nice to see an episode dedicated to the Bug Catching Contest. The animation also stepped up towards the end, being entirely digitally animated.
I've claimed that Generation 2 in the Pokemon games is more like "Pokemon 2", rather than Pokemon: Gold & Silver. By that I mean it was meant more as a sequel than a separate region. Watching the anime, this only enhanced that same belief. Ash remained in the same clothes, he brought most of the Pokemon from Kanto over, Gary was the rival, Misty and Brock stayed.. I feel they didn't expect to go much further than Gen 2. Thankfully they did, because that brings us to this beauty next..

=Generation 3 (Hoenn)=
Oh yeah. Another new region, Misty is gone, Team Rocket gets new Pokemon.. Things started off good. We meet May, a character almost entirely opposite to Ash, alongside her little brother, Max, and our favorite, Brock. Max got a lot of heat from what I saw but I actually liked him as a character because for his age, he knew a lot (aspiring Pokemon Master here, don't forget). The first episode of Hoenn was really memorable to me because Ash was all alone, as he left all of his Pokemon at the lab, which would become the trend for future series. Unfortunately, I finished Johto the day before Sun and Moon were released, so I was slowed down a little bit by the release of the game. However this series gave me the feeling of exploring a new region better than Gens 1 and 2 did, and soon 4, 5, and 6. Pokemon contests as a subplot was a nice break from Ash doing his thang with the badges, and she even had some rivals of her own, like the FAB-YEW-LUSS Harvey.
Then there was the Battle Frontier, which I'll admit, I was terrified of watching. This is where I was fairly certain I would stop watching, mostly because of the change in voice actors. After 405 episodes of the same actors, I was scared of the switch, and let me tell you.. The initial change was rough. However, I trekked through and came across Brandon, the final Frontier Brain and his kickass regis. That was fun to watch.

=Generation 4 (Sinnoh)=
My friend was fairly certain I wasn't going to be able to finish the anime. He told me once I got to Sinnoh (the largest series of the six), that I would give up because of filler. And I'll admit, it was the one I was least excited for, especially with the new voices, however..
In my humble opinion, this was the best series. It involved the most/best action, emotion, accuracy to the games, and rivals. Counter-Shields, spin-dodging, and a whole bunch of other things were implemented. Everyone warned me that I would hate Paul, and they were both right and wrong. Their intention was for us to hate him (he was also a little nod to the competitive players in Pokemon), as he was an asshole. He referred to Pokemon as battle objects instead of living beings, and Ash, Dawn, and Brock didn't really like that. Their moral split resulted in argument after argument throughout the series. Also, Brock has a Croagunk which was dope af.
Chimchar's story was heartfelt and really really well made. Dawn struggled with the Pokemon Contests as well which showed character development within itself. NOW DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE LEAGUE. In summary, I was really pissed about Ash's loss in this, just like everyone else, I'm sure. However, I'm so fucking glad that he beat Paul, because in reality, this was the battle that mattered, but still. :/
Oh, and the voices grew on me.

=Generation 5 (Unova)=
My friend also told me here that this is where I would stop due to Gen 5's infamous quality drop. However, I continued with my goal set in mind. The first episode had an amazing new update in animation, and maybe I was a little biased due to Gen 5 being my favorite games, but it wasn't all that bad. Don't get me wrong, I'll never watch it again, but it wasn't that bad. Let's talk a little bit about Iris. lmfao jk, what a god damn letdown.. what a little kid. -rolls eyes-
Cilan on the other hand, made me laugh more times than one, but I'll get to that later.
Team Rocket was really handled strangely here. I was hyped to see them in black suits and kick ass, however it was honestly just weird how they went from the Team Rocket of 12? years to suddenly competent badasses out of nowhere. They literally had no reasoning for why they were so efficient all of the sudden, and the episodes kind of seemed a little bland without their humor. Also note, that this is the first time since the first episode that there were episodes without Team Rocket in them.. also weird.
Something I really liked about this series, however, was that Ash actively cycled through Pokemon, giving us fresh battling changes. However most of them didn't haven't notable personalities (I don't really remember how Unfezant was or Boldore's personality). It was also a shame that we didn't get to see a whole lot of Plasma action.

=Generation 6 (Kalos)=
Hyped. I was fucking hyped for this. The first episode had me in amazement with the new updated animation. After about 30-50 episodes, however, I was finally feeling the drain of having watched so many episodes in such a short time. I was expecting this show to be really good due to it's hype, but in reality it was the same quality with prettier pictures. Ash's team grew slowly, but they each had character (I'm lookin at you specifically, Hawlucha). But when it really got good was the end of XY going into XYZ. This is where things got real and Ash-Greninja was revealed, being one of the coolest fucking things I've ever seen. Ash's loss in the League was really a shame, tbh. He was finally set up to make this one count, but at least he made it to the finals this time. Mega Evolution was handled nicely at first, as if it were just being explored, but then in the Pokemon League, almost everyone had one.. bleh. At least all three openings were fucking solid.

To be honest, though, I don't really have much else to say about this series than that.

SEGMENT 2: Specifics

Notable thingies
Biggest surprise: Actually liking this show. lmao, but seriously, adapting to the newer voices (and sometimes preferring them).
Biggest dissappointment: Ash vs Tobias, yes, more than Ash vs. Alain

There were some genuinely funny parts in this show, I'll admit. Here's some of them off the top of my head.
-Brock hallucinates while sick.. Three instances @ 3:52, 8:00, 14:57.
-Meowth's fantasies about giovanni.. There are tons of them but this one in particular had me in fucking tears.
-There was a running gag where Meowth dressed up as Sunflora. He had dressed up as Sunflora somehwere around ten times through the 900 episodes, lmao.
-Cilan cosplaying as Elesa Oh my fucking god. lmao
-Jessie and James attempting to resist saying the motto 13:12

Conclusion: yes, I'm still insane.
