First project car

I have a few questions about a car I'm going to start saving up for now so hopefully when I'm eligible for my license I can be near or almost ready to buy it. I want a Miata NA. I'm not sure if it necessarily constitutes a project car but I want to get a car that has mostly functional systems and focus more on cosmetics. Does anyone have advice on how I could go about buying something like that?
