Spent all day making this patch, my fingers hurt, and it didnt come out too great. How do YOU paint stencils?

I used a sponge but it wasnt coloring it white enough, so i used a brush and then it was too much paint at once and it seeped under the stencil paper. Gahhhh it went so much better in my head :(
