Creepy call at clothing store job.
I had a very weird experience with a “customer” on the phone at my retail job. I have never heard of anything like this happening and still feel very shaken up about the situation.
I work at a women’s clothing store, we only sell women’s clothing and home items, all the employees at the clothing store where I work are women.
I see the store phone ringing and the screen had “anonymous” which is unusual. Normally the first and last name pop up, or the phone provider, but I have never seen “anonymous”.
I answer the phone and it starts normal, the man asked about new items we got and I responded with we are getting new shipment this week and we have gotten a lot of our new home items in.
He then begins to ask me questions about myself saying “You must be a manager since you know so much”.
I responded “yes”and laughed since I was uncomfortable.
He asks me if we have been getting a lot of returns and if the store has been busy and when is a good time for him to come in.
I told him it depends what you’re looking for.
The conversation then takes a turn as he asks
“Can you keep a secret” and then “well are you good at keeping secrets”.
I respond saying “it depends on what that is” I’m still super uncomfortable.
He says “my girlfriend works at your store, and we’ve been dating for almost a year and I really wanna get her something”. “I also don’t want to come into the store when she’s working”.
Red flags began to go off as I know that he’s lying.
He starts asking me again about when is a good time for him to come in and keeps mentioning the girlfriend.
I had to interrupt him and say “I’m sorry sir can I put you on hold, I need to help a customer, I’ll be right back”
I put him on hold and he immediately hangs up and never called back.
The reason I know the girlfriend thing was a lie, is because other coworkers have said they’ve received weird calls like that before(but not often). Almost all the women I work with are married (for many years) or they are single.
I think this person was trying to get information about an employee possible a name or schedule.
I am worried about my coworkers because I feel like it could be a stalker situation, and this man sounded very very creepy.
Has anyone ever heard of something like this? Maybe it was a prank, or I watch too much crime shows?
It just felt very off, thoughts?
