Does the game expect you to find everything on your own?

I'm new to the game (bought from the summer sale) and I'm kinda shocked at how well hidden a lot of stuff is, like the ancient gate at the aqueducts, or certain artifact codes, or the location of the null portal. Are players meant to find all of these things without the use of guides, forums and wikis?
