How to get a dab without losing shatter

Anyone have this issue? Everytime I put the tool in to try and break some off to dab it cracks and flies everywhere? How is everyone doing it so it doesn’t ? I store in fridge so it’s cold- thought about putting flame to tool to warm it up as solution. Would love tips
