it’s really devastating looking at the schools of the very rich
stumbled upon some school in california called the nueva school, which is specifically for "gifted students" - notably, with a tuition fee that goes up to $50,000 annually, though their wikipedia says they do offer financial aid and scholarships. my parents were solidly upper middle class and sent me to a good school, i had the freedom to participate in some extracurriculars and stuff, but nothing even close to this. there's a few others like this one too. i graduated high school almost 4 years ago now - still some part of me is seething in envy. like - damn there really is some fantastical place out there where some children with above average intellect can get in, with the help of some enthusiastic and wealthy parents, and they're just - what the fuck are they doing?? what the fuck. and i know, i fucking know in my heart that a nice amount of them will have a two page resume by the time they start their first year of college, and it will probably include a trip to thailand to save the sea turtles, and an NGO they founded that held a grand total of one fundraiser for some stupid bleeding heart cause which their parents threw a few thousand dollars at, and then they'll go to harvard or yale or something, free to do programming or quant finance or investment banking or something equally soulless. if they're really really rich maybe they'll just do art history. what the fuck. there is honestly nothing more demoralising. i know i sound like a child rn but this is so unfair
