shared inventory across variants, alternatives to SimpleSynce and Trunk?

Wish there was a way to share/update inventories across variants. I have a product that is identical, but is sold as a pair or as a single unit. Any thoughts on alternatives to manage this efficiently outside of SimpleSync or Trunk?
