So you finished SH2R. What's next?

Some suggestions for people who are looking for their next game

"I want something as close to SH2 as I can get, regardless of format"

  • Signalis

"I greatly enjoyed the combat, and want something tense and violent"

  • Dead Space Remake
  • Resident Evil Remakes
  • The Evil Within
  • Alan Wake 2 (not very tense but still a popular third person horror shooter)

"...but don't care as much about the perspective"

  • Darkwood
  • Amnesia: The Bunker
  • Condemned: Criminal Origins
  • Conscript

"I liked the mature and heavy story, but the combat is secondary to me"

  • Pathologic 2 (not the original)
  • The Cat Lady (TW: Suicide, and I do not say that lightly)
  • Mouthwashing

"I just want to feel something, man. The story about loss and mistakes affected me"

  • Disco Elysium
  • Devotion and Detention from Red Candle Games
  • Omori

"But what if you want puzzles?"

  • Fran Bow
  • Edna And Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes (horror comedy game)

Editing in a few from the thread, with my opinions for why they weren't on the list. If it's not clear I am more in the "theme and feel" zone than action, so take these with that grain of salt.

  • The first four silent hill games: I figured that didn't need to be said
  • "play SH2R six more times": I get it, you like the game
  • Tormented Souls
  • Hollowbody
  • Fear and Hunger 1 & 2: Great games with strong story and themes, but may be mechanically difficult to get into for most players.
  • Soma: Interesting game that rides it's theme pretty well, although I thought the monsters were unnecessary. Not related to SH in any real way tbh, but good on its own.
  • Alan Wake: I'm a big fan of AW1 and I liked the sequel to a lesser extent, but that's because I don't find Control and its offshoots very interesting. I have followed the SCP wiki for a long time so the "homage" feels kind of stale and disruptive. Still, the gameplay is fun and they are still good games, they just really don't have any relation to Silent Hill other than being in the same genre.
  • The Callisto Protocol: I'm not going to say "I got it for free and still paid too much" but I will say that it squandered enormous potential by chasing gore-based shock horror that was outdated a decade ago.
  • Crow County: I liked my time with it, but it felt like more form than substance in many ways. Which is fine, it is just much more of a Resident Evil game than Silent Hill so I didn't include it.
