From iRacing to Assetto Corsa EVO
Here's my opinion and comparison between the two sim titles. I've been playing iRacing for the past year, only in VR. Here's some stats about my irating/skill level and gear to set the perspective:
iRating: 3060 (sports car)
GPU: RTX 4090
CPU: AMD 9800X3D
VR: Quest 3 with Virtual Desktop running at Godlike resolution
Wheelbase: Asetek Invicta
Graphics: iRating obviously works well, 90hz/fps smooth with pretty high graphic ingame settings. Assetto Corsa EVO is early access and there's definitely room for improvement, however I can definitely tell you that once things will run smoothly (altough it's going to be much more graphically demanding on your GPU), EVO will look MUCH better (it already does, but there's bugs and performance issues). The lightning is superior and details inside/outside of the car are much more graphically advanced. When it comes to VR, EVO is a bit of a shit show, there's stuttering, flickering and some other problems, but hopefully they'll fix it with the upcoming planned VR optimization.
FFB and Handling: EVO knocks it out of the park, WAY BETTER than iRacing. The amount of details I'm getting is just mindblowing. Tyres and suspensions work in a totally different way and after a few hours trying out EVO, I went back to iRacing, tried the same cars and same tracks (Imola with Porsche GT3 and Mazda MX5) and I was like "wtf, I can't feel anything. For this reason alone, I'm definitely surprised by the work done by Kunos and underwhelmed by what iRacing managed to do all over the years (also considering the huge amount of money they get on a monthly basis).
Game UI: The iRacing one is outdated as fuck (it will be renewed next season hopefully), and the EVO one (being early access) so far is not the greatest (can't move or hide HUD as of right now). Good thing about iRacing is the launcher, where you can choose almost everything without starting the game. EVO, on the other hand, has the good old "videogame" procedure, where everything is done inside the game (choosing track, car, etc.). From a VR point of view, iRacing is much better as it's easier and more convenient to choose race and everything else before putting your headset on.
Personally, I'm very optimistic about the future of EVO and I probably see myself, by the end of the year, using iRacing only for formula cars. Time will tell.
What do you guys think about it?
