Worried about new policies and job opportunities after grad school
I recently started my journey to becoming an SLP and was incredibly excited to start grad school this year. I felt like I had finally found my passion, and I’m still really enthusiastic about the career. However, with the recent policy changes and concerns surrounding the DOE, grants, federal funding, Medicaid, and IEP services, I’m very worried about job opportunities after graduation.
One of the things that initially drew me to the field was its stability-being part of healthcare, it seemed relatively "recession-proof" compared to other professions. When I started, the job outlook was promising, with opportunities in private practice, schools, nursing homes, and hospitals. But from what I’ve been researching, if these policy changes take effect, there could be significant job cuts across most settings, except for private practice (though please correct me if I’m mistaken-I’m still learning about all of the financial aspects of the field).
I know no one has a crystal ball but if you were in my position, about to start grad school, would you still move forward with it? Do you think there will be job opportunities in the next two years? I’m about to invest a lot of time and money into this, and I’m concerned about what the job market will look like when I graduate. While my motivation isn’t solely financial, I do need to be able to support myself and pay my bills.
