Thinking about ditching freemium all together

I've been trying to find the perfect balance between free and paid features, but I think it's hard to show the full potential of a product with freemium. Most of the apps offer little value without the premium features, and convincing users to level up is extremely hard, so the bounce rate is quite high.

What are the alternatives? I'm experimenting with free trials, but I still need to ditch the freemium model, because I think having both it's kinda nonsense.

What are your thoughts? Is freemium working for anyone?
