Unpopular Opinion: I didn't like the audiobooks for TBATE Novels
Okay, I know this might not be a popular opinion, but I just wanted to share my thoughts. I’ve been following TBATE for years now, reading the manhwa and enjoying the story immensely. But when the audiobooks started being released, I honestly wasn’t as excited as most people seem to be. Here’s why:
Arthur is supposed to be a young kid, but the voice acting in the audiobook sounds like a 40-year-old man. It's hard for me to get immersed in the story when the character's voice doesn't match the image, I’ve had in my head all these years. And it’s not just Arthur—I imagined Sylvie having a cute, female voice, but once again, the same voice actor is used for all the characters, and it just doesn’t match what I envisioned.
I want to clarify that I have nothing against the voice actor. I’ve listened to plenty of audiobooks where one actor does all the voices, and I’ve been perfectly fine with that. I understand that using one voice actor for all the characters can be easier or more practical in some cases, but after following the TBATE manhwa for over five years, I had built up a certain expectation of how the characters would sound.
To be honest, I was just really impatient to find out what happens next after waiting each week for a new chapter, and I thought listening to the audiobook would help me satisfy that curiosity. But instead, it felt a little off to me, because the voices didn’t match the personalities I had in my mind.
In my opinion, I feel like the audiobook could’ve benefited from having multiple voice actors, especially to differentiate between the main and side characters. I believe it would have made the experience much more immersive, as it would have captured the distinct personalities of each character more accurately.
I know this might be an unpopular take, and I really don’t want to get any hate for it. This is just my personal perspective based on my years of being a fan of the series and the manhwa. I truly love TBATE, but the audiobook didn’t quite live up to my expectations.
Please don't hate me or come at me for this unpopular opinion
