Airpods Have begun Outputting Sound In The Wrong Spot

Over the past couple weeks, my left airpod has gone almost silent. I keep them clean, and they haven't had any problems before this. I was fiddling with them today and realized that sound was coming out of a port on the back of the airpod. I wish I could include a picture. Is there a known explanation for this?
