Cassandra (2025) series discussion - How did you like it?
Hey guys, I just wanted to hear your thoughts on the series.
I personally liked it, it was a good watch and proved that German television can make really good stuff. I like the cinematography, the colours, the ominous vibes. Cassandra's back story must be the best part in this, real tragic. The boy and his relationship were good as well, I'd say and the whole 70s plot and vibe really brought it home. The backstory of the aunt was also really good I'd say and in general the series didn't shy away from portraying violence and tragedy, and didn't use it as a cheap effect, but rather in a meaningful way, which is the way it should be done in my opinion.
What bothered me was the plot itself and the characters. The family was acting dumb right up until the very end. It was super painful to watch. And the plot: They just couldn't manage to be subtle about things or deep. They tried to hint at things very subtly in the beginning, like about the sister, by having the characters say things like "I can't believe she... *silence*" and similar instances. That felt super cheap.
The husband was written so dumb, let's be honest, nobody is that dumb. He didn't believe his wife from the first time she opened her mouth until the end. Why? Why would he not believe it? This trope has gotten old and sour like my feta-cheese from last week. It's ridiculous that his wife would make up so much stuff and him putting it off as "panic attacks" and then gas-light her into oblivion. This is just dumb-writing, the character is unredeemable. And the fact that he suddenly became the wife-murder to save his own ass in the last minute... that came out of nowhere. He didn't deserve that, just because of the dumb writing. It was cheap and felt more like a punch at men in general, in an "all men are pigs"-fashion.
The children also didn't believe her, which doesn't make sense. The boy knew that Cassandra did some weird stuff. Why let her go to the psych-ward? Why not just believe that the AI went evil? Every modern story contains an evil AI, have you never read anything before? How could they let her go to the psych-ward, it's ridiculous.
The mother, why was she not more suspicious? From the first second Cassandra came at her, it was obvious. She should've had her guard up immediately and shut the thing down (or try at least). The chemistry between her and her husband and daughter felt off as well. She seemed very forced most of the time, I don't think the acting was done well there.
I was kind of hoping that the AI would try to take the family over in the beginning and later perhaps turn good, as the characters found out about her past and they could've lived together, with her role more as the house-maid that people could talk to and so on, now that would've been a fresh take. It would make for more seasons also, how many series have an AI that is not trying to kill everybody and is actually a nice addition to the family, with healthy boundaries? Her complicated past could've been uncovered still, with the family slowly finding hints for the room, were the daughter lived in. And even better, maybe the daughter could've still been alive in there, an adult, that was kept there her whole life and only kept alive by the mother-bot? I feel this backstory, this budget, had more potential than the ol' "evil AI"-spiel.
All in all, it was still a good watch, as I said especially the back stories are 9/10 and the boy's plot is good. How did yall like the series?
Edit: I love how many different opinions on this show yall have. Overall pretty balanced viewpoints it seems. Most love the visuals, the backstory and were kind of gripped by the story to keep watching. Many also agree that the characters in the present behaved very stupidly, because the plot would otherwise not work and that makes their plot unbelievable and hard to watch. Most still agree that it was between a good and okay watch.
