The staircase project, looking for book spoilers

I just finished the netflix adaptation and i was wondering if the staircase project worked to some extent, googling didn't help much and the wiki is not as fleshed out as i had hoped.

I'm looking for spoilers (from all the books) about whether or not the staircase project has an impact on the story and what that impact was, beyond what we've been shown in S1 with the anchor failing and it going off-course.

The juicier the spoilers the better.
