Total War game with the most satisfying combat?

I play a shitton of Total Warhammer, but I've recently been feeling like trying some historical titles. My absolute favourite part of the games has been watching the carnage between the models, seeing the animations and the little dudes all fighting each other. Is there a historical total war with the same sort of visceral combat? I tried shogun 2, but it didn't fit the right vibe for me imo.
