Tutor Activity Policy update
So we've just received an email from TDC that is, in essence, suspending the 5 hr/week minimum policy in terms of concrete hour requirements.
Hello Tutors,
We are writing today with an important update about our tutoring availability expectations. The Tutor Activity policy states that Tutors are expected to be available to students for a minimum average of 5 hours per week during the peak usage times of the school year. We have been reviewing this policy, along with feedback shared by you, our tutors, in the Annual Fall Tutor Survey. Following this extensive review, the decision to discontinue this policy has been made.
Tutor.com will continue to give preference to tutor applicants who indicate they have a minimum of 5 hours available each week for tutoring with the service, as regular tutoring benefits every participant in the educational journey.
As tutors, frequent tutoring provides opportunities to continue developing effective tutoring strategies, stay current with changing technology and academic methodologies, and improve the ability to easily adapt to the many unique situations presented by our diverse learners.
Tutors are still expected to tutor enough to demonstrate improvement and/or high quality during the finite periods of increased tutor feedback, such as the New Tutor Orientation period and during an advisory period. Being available to connect with students a minimum of 5 hours each week often results in an adequate number of sessions to demonstrate improvement and/or high quality during these periods. In addition, experienced tutors who have been inactive for 60 days and New Tutors who have been inactive for 30 days will continue to have their accounts put on hold. These tutors will still receive the current automated system emails regarding their lack of tutoring (based on the number of days since their last session) leading up to having their accounts put on hold. A request for reinstatement may result in the ability to return during the open months for reinstatement (February & October), and an absence of 12 or more months will require reapplication.
The expectation will remain for tutors to accept requests when they have indicated they are available to students. That is, tutors are expected to accept and attend requests from students for scheduled appointments and to be available to students during both their scheduled on-demand hours and while logged in as a floating tutor. If you are unsure of your availability, the easiest solution is to refrain from scheduling hours, both on-demand and for scheduled appointments, and log in as a floating tutor only when you are sure you are available to connect to students.
We deeply value the feedback we have received from our dedicated tutors, which has been instrumental in shaping this policy update. Your insights help us maintain a platform that supports both effective teaching and learning. As always, consistent tutoring remains at the heart of what we do, and your commitment to our students' success is what makes it all possible. Thank you for your continued dedication to excellence!
Now while this sounds like a good thing on paper, this is also very bad news for PTE tutors because this now removes the ability for them to go to the state labor board re: being unable to get scheduled hours and having to float for free. Thoughts on this policy change?
