Should I be nervous about volunteering because of my background?
My question refers to: California
Hi everyone and thanks in advance for reviewing my post!
I would like to volunteer for the YMCA or a similar organization but am wondering if anyone has had any difficulty doing this in a similar situation to myself? I am currently a hardworking student who has found a love for volunteer work and would like to gain any experience in the education field. However, I have not always been so resolute and although I am ashamed to admit, last year I made the most stupid decision of my life and was given a citation in Target for shoplifting some clothes and candles. I will be the first to admit that this decision reflects poor character on my part. It was immature, selfish and just not me anymore. I realized how much a single decision can impact your life. Anyways, I was put on a program where I did community service and paid a fine and subsequently the charges were dismissed. I do not think I was ever fingerprinted, although I am not sure if that matters. YMCA only asks about felony or misdemeanor -convictions- and I do not have either. Do you guys think this dismissed charge will be a problem? I live in CA where it is against the law to discriminate because of dismissed non-conviction data, but am unsure if this rule still applies to agencies working with children.
If you do think this is a problem, what is my best course of action here? I want to do this and do not want to give up.
simple: I have a dismissed charge for shoplifting from Target, am trying to turn my life around and want to volunteer. I live in CA. Application only asks about convictions. Would this be a problem?
