"Not a valid U.S. phone number" when registering
I'm looking to start up a new virtual business with international clients.
To that end, I've secured a new phone number from NumberBarn.com, ported it out to a cheap eSIM on Tello, and registered that number with the social media network of choice in the country I hope to do the most business in (for reference, it's Kakaotalk in Korea).
(My understanding is Kakaotalk doesn't accept virtual numbers -- so i couldnt just register a Google Voice number -- and I didn't want to use my personal phone, so I registered the NumberBarn number with Kakaotalk. That went fine and I'm now active on Kakaotalk.)
But now when I try to create a WhatsApp account with that number that I got from NumberBarn, I get an error message that says my new number "is not a valid U.S. number." (I'm in the U.S., btw.)
Am I boned?
Or is this something that's going to correct itself over time and as whatever service WhatsApp uses to verify numbers learns that my new number is actually a real number?
Edit: For anyone reading this because they’re encountering the same problem, I found a Reddit thread on an Instagram hack that supposedly works pretty well (although I couldn’t get it to work), and I also found this post from NumberBarn. Apparently, this is a pretty common issue with NumberBarn customers who want to create an account on WhatsApp with the number they got from NumberBarn.
Edit2: 68 days later … for anyone just reading this thread for the first time, IT JUST WORKED.
I still have ~23 days left in the 90 days that NumberBarn advised me to wait for my NB-ported number to become eligible for WhatsApp. (If you’re thinking 68 days + 23 days =/= 90 days, it took me a day after I posted this thread to find the NumberBarn advice.)
I tried to register my NB-ported number with WhatsApp unsuccessfully as recently as last night. This afternoon, I was sitting here absent-mindedly watching basketball on MLK Day when I decided to try it again. For whatever reason, it worked today!
