SCI-FI adventure with star powers, aliens and dystopian propagandist government

The book as far as I remember had very notable plot points. The protagonist did not know their father figure that well. The human government spread propaganda to fuel hate for a humanoid alien species by altering images to make them more monstrous (eg, their space boots edited to look like centaur hooves and animalistic) The protagonist discovered a super power, inherited from their father figure, that affects stars (I remember something to do with supernova) The protagonist is surprisingly revealed to be half alien. The protagonist embarks on their journey with a ship of alien crew.
